After Martin Zubimendi’s unsuccessful transfer to Liverpool, Arne Slot has maintained that it is pointless to talk about him.
During the summer transfer window, the Reds were eager to acquire the Real Sociedad midfield player. Zubimendi was ready to accept Liverpool’s £52 million release clause, and Slot intended to appoint him as his first head coach.
Instead, Zubimendi chose to remain at Sociedad. The Spain star, who assisted his team in winning Euro 2024, has reportedly expressed regret for his choice and begged Liverpool to rekindle their interest when the January transfer window opens, according to a report from Estadio Deportivo earlier this week.
This season, the Reds have won four of their first five games, and Ryan Gravenberch has been very good since moving up to the number-six spot. Speaking ahead of today’s match at Anfield against AFC Bournemouth, Slot also stated he is delighted with the contribution Gravenberch has made.
“If you’ve noticed, it’s more of two holding midfielders than it is of one holding midfielder,” the Reds head coach stated. And like Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo, and [Alexis] Mac Allister, Ryan can fit into both roles. One of those two can be a little more offensive. I believe the player you mentioned, Zubimendeldi, might have fit into one of those two roles.
Talking about Zubimendi is pointless now since he stays with Real Sociedad, we’ve moved on, and Ryan makes us very pleased. You observe Ryan as exuding confidence, which is typically a result of strong work output, mutual trust, and the conviction that one can perform to the required standard at that level.
