Steelers cut eight players in the first wave of cuts, including notable former Georgia RB

The Pittsburgh Steelers have reduced their roster to 53 players by Tuesday at 4 p.m., and they have made their first round of cuts. Former Georgia running back Daijun Edwards was cut during training camp after he had difficulty receiving regular playing time.

With a ton of experience from his time at Georgia, Edwards signed as an undrafted free agent with the Steelers. However, he was never able to convert that experience into regular opportunities behind La’Mical Perine and Jonathan Ward.

Edwards, wide receivers T.J. Luther and Jacob Copeland, offensive linemen Tyler Beach and Devery Hamilton, defensive back Kiondre Thomas, defensive lineman Marquiss Spencer, and linebacker Kyahva Tezino are also included in the complete list of released players.

Although any of the players mentioned above could return, cutting someone this early usually means they won’t be added to the practice squad. Newly signed players like Thomas and Tezino may soon find positions on the practice squad as the Steelers evaluate their options and release players.

Now, Pittsburgh has just 82 players. Due to German edge rusher Julius Welschof, who serves as the team’s international exemption, they had 91 players on their roster. He will therefore very certainly be included on the practice squad.

At the official end of the league day on Tuesday at 4 p.m., Pittsburgh will have 53 players on the roster. Up to two players who were not required to be on the original 53-man roster may be designated to return from injured reserve. It will also not be necessary for Cole Holcomb, who will be placed on the PUP list, and Cam Sutton, who will be suspended, to remain on the original 53-man roster.
